LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Sony Picture’s heist film “Takers” grabbed the No. 1 spot at North American box offices over the weekend, overtaking psychological thriller “The Last Exorcism” in a turnabout from early studio estimates.
Final box office figures released on Monday showed “Takers” raking in $20.51 million, just edging out Lionsgate’s “Last Exorcism,” which had a haul of $20.36.
Sunday’s estimates put “Last Exorcism” at $21.3 million, a slim $300,000 advantage over “Takers” with $21 million.

Men who have small red spots on the back of their ears are invariably virgins, according to celebrity Vietnamese acupuncturist Pham Thi Hong. Hong fought to free three convicted rapists from prison after she discovered that the men had the spots, the AP reports. Hong’s determination to have the case reopened (she threatened to light herself on fire) caused prosecutors to do just that—the men were released after investigators found flaws in the initial case.
“They all had small red spots on the back of their ears,” Hong says. “The spots should have disappeared if they had had sex. My many years of experience told me that these men did not have sex before.” Gay sex or masturbation won’t make the spots disappear, she says. Her alleged virgin-detecting abilities have been met with skepticism from fellow acupuncturists.

A new study from the Pew Research Center shows that childlessness is at a record high in America.One in five women aged 40 to 44 reported that they’ve never had children. Meanwhile, just 41 percent of Americans say having children is necessary to a good marriage, compared to 65 percent in 1990.
The study suggests that the two trends may well arise form relaxed social pressure about having kids.
In a striking shift, women with advanced degrees are bucking the no-babies trend, with a higher percentage of them having children than in years past. Though childlessness as a whole is still highest among women with advanced degrees, rates of childlessness among women with masters’ degrees decreased by 17 percent since 1994. It also declined by 32 percent for women with professional and doctorate degrees over the same period. Nine percent of all women held advanced degrees in 2008.
Meanwhile, the rate of childlessness has increased most sharply among the least educated women. The likelihood that a woman without a high school diploma will be childless after 40 has increased 66 percent since 1994. Though white women are most likely to be childless, rates of childlessness among Hispanics and blacks have increased by 30 percent since 1994, compared to only 11 percent for white women.
“Scholars say that social pressure to bear children appears to have diminished for women and that today, the decision to have a child is seen as an individual choice,” Pew researchers Gretchen Livingston and D’Vera Cohn write. “Improved opportunities and contraceptive methods help create alternatives for women.”

TAMPA – Two Tampa police officers have died after they were shot during a routine traffic stop early Tuesday morning.
The shooting happened at 50th Street and 34th Avenue at 2:15 a.m. Tuesday. Police have named two persons of interestin the case as they conduct a massive search in the area of the shooting.
Police Chief Jane Castor announced in a morning news conference that Officer Jeff Kocab, 31, had passed away, shortly after he was brought to Tampa General Hospital.
FOX 13 has learned that Officer Dave Curtis, also 31, was put on life support and pronounced dead around 8:30 a.m. at TGH.

Mayor Pam Iorio said Officer Jeff Kocab leaves behind a wife who is nine months pregnant. Officer Kocab had only been with Tampa police for 14 months and previously worked for the Plant City Police Department.
FOX 13 has learned that Officer Kocab’s wife has had some contractions Tuesday morning but has not gone into labor as was previously reported.
Officer Dave Curtis had been with the department for almost four years. Tampa police say he previously worked as a detention deputy with the Hillsborough Sheriff’s Office. He has a wife and four boys between the ages of 8 months and 9 years old, the mayor said.
Police told FOX 13 that Curtis’ family will be donating his organs.
