Movie is breaking records all over the world:
Sony Pictures is saying this morning its 2012 opened as a runaway No. 1 with $23.7 million Friday from 3,404 theaters, including $1M in Thursday midnights, for what’s looking like a $61+M weekend. Plus, it’s made $58.4M through Friday internationally. That’s big for a PG-13 popcorn pic that’s neither a previously established brand or franchise. Yet another in a long line of signature Roland Emmerich films featuring world destruction, this catastrophe film was anything but at the domestic and international box office which could total a huge $170M by Sunday night. It became Sony Pictures’ 8th #1 North American film this year by exceeding expectations due to a marketing campaign that went into overdrive 6 weeks ago.
The word on the street is this movie is amazing. Well, when I check it out this evening, I’ll come back and give you a grade. Sit tight…
